Nikki walked up to the Carlisle with the masked painting in tow. As she struggled to get through the door, the security guard rushed to hold it open for her.

“Thank you,” she said on a breathy sigh. Then she looked up at him with wide eyes and rushed the rest of the story out. “The delivery guy on the street saw my lab coat and ID and pressed me into signing for this. It’s supposed to go to Roberta Wolcott. Since she’s my new supervisor, I know it’s the right place. I hope it’s okay that I signed for it. I have no idea what protocol is here.”

“I’m sure it’ll be fine. Can I see your ID?”

She held it up to him. He barely glanced at it.

With a nod, he said, “You know where you’re going?”

“Somewhere upstairs?” she asked with a shrug and jostled the painting.

“Come with me. I’m Jason.” He waved at the clerk to say he’d be back. “Let me carry this for you.”

He took the painting from her. The plan was working almost too easily. “Thank you. I’m Alice.”

“I don’t know if Dr. Wolcott is here yet, but someone up there will be able to get you started.”

“Thank you so much for your help. I’m so nervous. I still can’t believe that I’m able to intern here.”

At the top of the stairs, he continued into a room that had long worktables and various pieces of art being studied or cleaned. It was a thief’s playground. Nikki refocused. She was here for one thing and one thing only. But in the back of her head, she catalogued everything she could walk out with.

A guy wearing a lab coat rushed at them. “Where are you going?”

Nikki stepped forward and extended a hand. “I’m Alice, your new intern.”

The guy looked at her hand and then up at Jason. “What’s that?”

“Delivery,” Jason answered.

“Just set it over there against the wall. We aren’t expecting anything, so we’ll deal with that later.”

Jason followed directions, sent a smile over his shoulder at her, and said, “Have a good first day.”

Lab coat guy just continued to stare at her.

“Is there an orientation or do I just jump right in?”

“No interns jump into anything here. You’re here to learn and do what you’re told.”

“Absolutely,” she said with a tight smile. This asshole deserved a swift kick to the shins. “What would you like me to do?”

“I have no idea. Roberta—Dr. Wolcott—usually likes to deal with interns. And as it’s Friday, she won’t be here until later.” He waved a hand. “Go over to the storage closet over there and sort through the materials. Make an inventory list.”

“Okay. Is there a format you prefer? Anything specific I should know about?”

“Look. We’re getting ready for a huge exhibit. Because of the attention this piece will bring, we’re rearranging other exhibits. We need an accounting of what we have to work with so we know what to order or borrow to create the vision Dr. Wolcott has.” He turned to walk away.
